The Difference Between Crawling and Indexing

A common misconception in web development is that publishing a URL automatically makes it available in Google Search. This is false. A URL must pass through a strict, multi-stage pipeline before it is eligible to rank.

Google Search Console (GSC) is the official diagnostic dashboard provided by Google. It is not an analytics platform for measuring user behavior; it is a direct communication line to the indexing algorithm.

Understanding GSC requires understanding the three stages of the pipeline:

  1. Discovered: Google knows the URL exists (usually via an XML Sitemap or an internal link), but it has not yet sent a bot to look at it.
  2. Crawled: Googlebot has physically downloaded the HTML of the page, but has not yet decided if the content is valuable enough to store in its database.
  3. Indexed: The algorithm has parsed the Rendered DOM, evaluated the Semantic Density, and officially added the URL to its global database. Only indexed pages can appear in search results.

Diagnosing the "Not Indexed" Errors

When auditing a website's technical health in GSC, the most critical section is the "Pages" report. This details exactly why URLs are failing the pipeline. Two specific errors indicate severe architectural or content quality issues.

"Discovered - currently not indexed"

This error indicates a severe Crawl Budget bottleneck. Google knows the pages exist, but its algorithms have determined that the server is either too slow to handle the crawl, or the site's overall quality is too low to justify spending computational resources downloading the files.

Search engines possess finite database storage. If a page receives no external backlinks, possesses zero internal links pointing to it, and generates no user clicks, the algorithm calculates that the page is "dead." It stops crawling the URL. Once it crosses the 190-day threshold of algorithmic neglect, the page is quietly de-indexed to save space.

This is why Server Log Analysis is mandatory for enterprise sites. If logs reveal that critical pages are approaching 100+ days without a Googlebot hit, emergency internal linking and architecture updates must be deployed to force a crawl and renew the indexation lease.

The Engineering Protocol: Requesting Re-Indexation

Because indexation is heavily dependent on crawl frequency, engineers cannot simply update a page and wait for Google to eventually notice.

When a core service page is overhauled—whether the JSON-LD Schema is updated, the target keyword is shifted, or the semantic density is improved—the search engine's cache must be forcibly cleared.
