A clear guide to Semantic Density, Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, and why visual page spacing matters just as much as the words you write.

The End of "Keyword Density"

Ten years ago, SEO was mostly about repeating yourself. If you wanted a page to rank for "Spokane SEO," you just made sure that exact phrase made up about 5% of all the words on the page. That was known as Keyword Density, and it resulted in websites that read like spam.

Today, search algorithms are incredibly smart. They use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to actually read the page the way a human does. They don't count specific keywords anymore; they look for the overall meaning and the relationships between ideas.

If you want a page to rank well today, you have to write clearly, directly, and naturally. We measure this using Semantic Density and established Readability Scores.

Semantic Frequency vs. Semantic Density

When Google reads your article, it looks for the main topic and then checks to see if you've included the necessary supporting details to prove you actually know what you're talking about.

  • Semantic Frequency: This is simply how often related terms show up. If you write an article about "Coffee Roasting," the algorithm expects a high frequency of related words like "temperature," "beans," "crack," and "cooling."
  • Semantic Density: This measures how much actual information is packed into your text versus how much of it is just "fluff." A 3,000-word article filled with rambling paragraphs and very few hard facts has a low semantic density. It makes the reader (and the search engine) work too hard to find the point.

Good SEO writing has a high semantic density. It gets straight to the point, delivers verified facts, and doesn't waste the reader's time.

Grading the Writing: Readability Indices

Search engines don't just care what you wrote; they care about how hard it is to read. If you are targeting an everyday consumer but your writing requires a college degree to understand, Google will lower your rank because it's a bad user experience.

We use standard linguistic formulas to grade website content and ensure it matches the target audience.

1. Flesch Reading Ease & Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

This is the baseline standard for readability. The formula looks at the total number of words, sentences, and syllables in your text.

  • Flesch Reading Ease: Scores text on a scale from 0 to 100. For most consumer websites, you want to aim for a score between 60 and 70.
  • Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: This translates that score into a U.S. school grade. Standard commercial web copy should usually sit around an 8th to 10th-grade reading level.

2. The Gunning Fog Index

The Gunning Fog Index is a stricter test. It specifically targets "complex words" (words with three or more syllables) compared to your sentence length. If a company's "About" page is loaded with dense corporate jargon and buzzwords, the Gunning Fog Index will spike. This tells us the text is bloated and needs to be rewritten in plain English.

Advanced Readability: The FORCAST Grade Level

Basic formulas like Flesch-Kincaid work great for standard blogs, but they fail completely if you are writing highly technical content.

If we are auditing a software development whitepaper, API documentation, or a medical journal, the text is going to be dense. It has to use big, complex words. Standard algorithms will flag this as "unreadable," which isn't accurate.

For technical, B2B, or industrial content, we use the FORCAST Grade Level.

The military originally developed this formula to test technical training manuals. Instead of punishing a text for having long words, FORCAST checks your vocabulary against a list of common, structural, everyday words. It gives us a much more accurate score of whether a technical document makes sense to a technical reader, without penalizing you for using industry-required terminology.

The Next Breakthrough: Rendered Micro Negative Space

Analyzing the text itself is only half the battle. A page might score a perfect 8th-grade reading level on paper, but if the website's design makes it look like a massive, unbroken gray wall of text with tiny fonts and zero spacing, a human user is going to leave immediately.

The words are readable, but the design is impenetrable.
